You may have noticed that I have been absent from the world of blogging for a considerable time and my excuse is that I accompanied Mrs H who was exhibiting her artwork, for a little over 9 weeks, at The Loughcrew Megalithic Centre near Oldcastle in Co. Meath. It was very successful and we met a lot of interesting people from all over the world, as well as making lots of new friends and reconnecting with old ones.
Physically we both felt weary after the exhibition closed so we decided to treat ourselves to a bit of R and R to recharge our batteries.
We have a favourite place in which to do this, a world away from our habitat, a place that I can best describe as being an area of old wildness that is skirted by the sea, a place that has always revitalised us with it's gentleness.

A refurbished Norman Towerhouse
A ladies bike with no sign of the owner and just to make sure that she had not
jumped into the sea I did take a look.
Seeing this oarsmen reminded me of a favourite piece of music, The Lonesome Boatman.
This old timer always catches my eye.
I'm not sure whether the yacht on the quay side has recently been removed from the water or if she has been there all summer.
As for this green hulled boat I assume that it is a workboat of some kind or other.
One thing is for sure it is the first craft I have ever seen to have exhaust pipes on
either side of the wheelhouse.
A bird on the loose ?
Long ago, in a former occupation of mine, seagulls were known as being
re-incarnated Fleet Chief Petty Officers, others knew them as shite hawks.
Now here is a really tidy, neat and clean looking sloop to be proud of.
What about this elderly lady, isn't she in good shape for her age ?
I bet her owner is very proud of her !

DeleteR&R is so important and what a beautiful place to go to. Delighted to hear you enjoyed the exhibition sounds like a good time was had by all. I go to Scotland, in particular the western highlands to re-charge, but closer to home Buckfast Abbey is a truly tranquil place.

DeleteI visited Buckfast Abbey donkey years ago likewise the village of Buckfastleigh too - it all seems like a dream now.
Oh, Mr H … I am so thankful for this post, especially The Lone Boatsman … I remember this music very well, but never knew the title … Am delighted to hear it again … I have been preoccupied with healing my broken knee cap for 7 weeks now … and this 4 minute music selection is perfect for my 4 minute (indoor) rowing exercise … Hopefully in no time I can hopefully turn my 4 minute rowing misery into a 30 minute rowing victory … Thank you again, says this cat from Alberta, Canada.
ReplyDeleteSorry to read about your broken knee cap, very surprised that they did not give you a replacement one, you will have to be very careful with it that arthritis does not develop in future years. Glad that you like that music, its a very haunting piece isn't it.

DeleteThe sound of the slap of water wether against a boats hull, dock side or a stony beach can have very therapeutic effect on busy minds. Mrs H took that photo of me outside of the exhibition hall and I could not help but send a wave to all of my friends.

DeleteWe had lots of visitors from all around the world, many of who recognised the folklore stories of the Cailleach behind paintings as being similar to those in their own cultures. So you can imagine just how exhilarating the exhibition was for us.
I can understand why you would seek R and R in west of Cornwall for it has a beauty all of it's own.
I thoroughly enjoyed that post and it's good to see you back in Blogland. You asked whether we had a place to re-charge batteries. I find that I have more than one set of batteries and they need different chargers. Generally speaking my batteries are re-charged every time I look out of my windows (as I am in between sentences I type this) at the garden and the sea and the Scottish Mainland on the other side of The Minch (weather conditions permitting). Sometime my cultural batteries require a visit to an opera, concert or ballet (I listen to music every day but sometime the 'real thing' is required).
