On the banks of Lough Derg.

A pictorial tour from the banks of Lough Derg where the mighty River Shannon flows,
past the counties Clare and Tipperary.

Autumnal colours at Mount Shannon

It was with sorrow that we found an inconvenient Convenience.

It does make me wonder about the sincerity of the local administrators,
closing down buildings such as these.
Where do they expect needy visitors to relieve themselves ?

It is against the Law in Ireland to relieve oneself within in a public area
irregardless of whether private parts are actually visible - even behind a tree.

In Mount Shannon harbour a foreign ( Dutch ?) craft is for sale.

I found her stern quarters as attractive as her bow and especially the yellow detailing.

The mascot of the Iargo Sneek.

From the banks of east Clare across a placid Shannon to Tipperary.

I think that the tower house, bottom right is Castlebawn which was restored in 1995

Lots of islands loiter creating dreams for some.

In case you are wondering I am not focussed on the tree :-)

More islands lurking near the banks of Clare can be seen when in County Tipperary.

From Portroe in Tipp to the misty mystique of county Clare.

In the foreground an old sleeping ground of yesterday's people lie silently slumbering.

I hope that you have enjoyed this photographic visit
as much as I have in sharing them.

  1. Wonderful photos of green and misty County Clare. Loved the individual look of that Dutch craft. As for closed toilets.. exactly, where do you go? They could have at least suggested or provided an alternative.

    1. Thank you for your comments L.A. and glad you enjoyed the photos.
The trouble with some local administrators is that they either do not care or are useless morons.

  2. We have been there Heron. It annoys me that you never see litter bins in Ireland except in towns.

    Hi Mel,
Lovely pictures..! The rivers and lakes around the green and autumn colours are so appealing...Ireland truly is a beautiful country full of so much history, scenery, culture..and vibrant modern life. I know everywhere has its pitfalls and charms, but Ireland does take some beating !
I see you managed to find another lovely boat too !

    1. Thanks Jack.
It is not often that you see me make critical remarks but the toilet closure really infuriated me... for there are times when people just have to 'go'

  4. Lovely pictures, a beautiful place. I do wonder why those toilets were even built right in front of a view as good as that though; would have expected them to be a bit more tucked away (open or closed). :)

With regard to the law, I learn something new every day. I wonder if it is legal in the UK? I have certainly seen the odd delivery man standing in that way which means only one thing on the side of busy A roads.

    1. Thanks Bella.
Actually there wasn't anywhere else to put the toilet block, for the other side of the road is residential.

The Law in Britain is very different in that men are allowed to P against the rear nearside wheel and women are allowed to Go behind the hedge. Hence the old call on long distance coaches that was sung out loudly as 'Hedgers' by those who needed such convenience.

We spent a happy rainy three weeks by Lough Derg at a campsite near Killaloe 21 days 19 with rain. Our sons never wanted to go camping again. When the boys went kayaking the weather forecast was rain with chance of sunshine ,we still enjoyed it. Lots of fishing, horse riding and interesting places.I have vivid memories of visiting an archaeological site, a crannog with coppiced woodland and the most beautiful mosses I have ever seen.
Nice to see it without the rain!

    1. Thank you Ms M. Yes, we do have days without any rain and sometimes for several days - almost a week occasionally :-) Thank you for the comment good and to hear from you.

  7. Well I've now caught up with your posts since we talked of 'blow-ins'. You've shown us some interesting places and people. Todays'a post (as you have said on my blog) resonates with me. I have a certain reluctance to urinate in a public place anyway but I can envisage situations where it might be necessary (being caught for 12 hours in a motorway traffic jam for instance as happened to many hundreds of people in England not long ago). Then I wondered whether it is unlawful to urinate on private land (ie not a public place) but which is visible to a person in a public place. And, of course, a public convenience is a public place. The law is a wonderful thing. I'm sure the legislators have been meticulous as usual.
One of the (many) great things about New Zealand is that almost every village has a public convenience and there are others dotted in forests and so on (some for trampers emptied by helicopter!). Now in France..........

    1. Ah' Hilary there are times when the wind is blowing that to be on Lough Derg, can be best likened to a boiling cauldron with waves coming at you from a variety of directions and it is exhilarating!
The Law is at best only shades of grey and never black and white :-)

  9. I did enjoy your photos and I too wonder what they were thinking of closing down the restrooms. Shouldn't be allowed unless they provide and alternative.

    1. It is very difficult to understand the motives of some people and perhaps we expect them to have common sense - which they quite obviously do not have.
      Thank you for commenting.
