Beyond the Hedges

My walk today took me in a different direction, to locations that my eyes have seen often
not always from the angle that I now show here.

This old uninhabited and neglected farmhouse with
it's grassed over yard and rusted gate promotes questions
to which I have no answers.

In this small lush field graze cattle with lovely straight backs.

There is a proliferation of Dog Roses this year.

Another old farmhouse again uninhabited, it's buildings though are still used.

A junction where three roads meet, each with equal right of way.
Look at the sky and you will see clouds seemingly rising above the trees.

This old home hidden behind the foliage looks well cared for surrounded as it is by trees.
I am told that the occupiers are rather eccentric and it is rumoured that the woman of
the house Bean an tí talks to the faeries.

  4. Well she has certainly created the right place for faeries to gather - so you never know.

  5. If those house walls could speak Heron. Think you have got a poem subject brewing there. I have heard it said that you could always tell when the local poacher wasn't at home. His house had no smoke coming from the chimney.

  6. Lovely set of photos, I liked the walk down the lane as well. Something sad about empty farmhouses but of course also romantic as they gently fall apart at the seams.

    1. Thank you for your comments Thelma. A great many of the empty and neglected farmhouses might well have been preserved and modernised internally with a bit of loving care, that's what I find sad.

  8. Lovely countryside. Wouldn't mind having a go at restoring some of the uninhabited places.

    1. Some people do Bill. A German friend of mine spent years touring Ireland looking at ruined castles and eventually he found one that he purchased and then spent many more years and a small fortune in restoring the place. See

    1. I reckon so John as neither of them were ever connected to the electric and so no plumbing etc. At least the first has a roof which the second one hasn't any more it was a thatch one 25 years ago - it has all fallen now.

  10. I came over to visit you from Northsider Dave's blog, I saw your comments on the flower bouquet that was herbal/medicinal.What a lovely place you photographed, the first photo is my favorite. I think I would like the lady of the house who talks to the faeries. I bet when its foggy they are playing everywhere. That is something I always think when its foggy here, that they can come out and play in the cover of the fog :O). 35 yrs of writing poems that is wonderful. I have only written one poem that I can remember and I am not sure it technically is a poem. Its on the left side bar of my blog. I wrote it after a visit to the Ozark Mountains of AR where I was raised. It had been a long, long time since I had been back to the mountains. Nice to meet/read you.

    1. Hello Texan, Good to receive such a great comment.
Yes, you probably would like She who talks to the faeries, a very personable and talented woman is She!
You are right about the Faeries coming out in the fog they also like moon lit nights too.
Modern poetry is a string of words that flow and dance out of the heart that when spoken have a subtle rhythm, I think.
Thank you for visiting my blog.
