Making a Spectacle of Myself

On the 3rd January I had my two yearly eye sight examination. The optician asked if I had noticed any change and I told her that my left eye seems to have deteriorated slightly and sure enough this was confirmed.

There was also a check back into the records for previous history and reference was made to 2009 when they sent a letter to my GP with regards to my High BP & Cholesterol.
Today there is no sign of either and I was pleased to point out that the vanquishing of those two monsters was all down my own efforts, as I had refused to take the doctors medications.
A change of eating habits and a walk of two miles before breakfast was all that was required.
At the end of the examination a photograph of each eyeball was taken. I found them to be very interesting as they showed in great detail all of the small veins and their various pathways.

Yesterday I re-visited the opticians to collect my new pairs of spectacles needed for driving & reading. The reading ones were immediately fine but when I put on the driving ones they felt quite odd and was informed that I would get used to the variance. On arriving home I tried them again and by using various tests I decided that the left lens was actually a identical copy of the left lens of my reading pair. So today I went back to the opticians where I told them of my suspicions.
After testing I was proved right and now it will be next week before I get the corrected pair - just as well I didn't attempt to drive home wearing them!

  1. Somebody told me walking is very good for the eyesight. Especially if you look into the distance when walking.

    1. Thank you for your comment Dave, there is definitely something in what you because looking into the distance relieves eye strain and there is no better exercise than walking.

  2. Doug, the new man in my life, is 78 and just wears glasses with variable tint for the sun but no prescription. He does regular eye exercises and body exercises as well as a lot of walking. Hard to believe having the wrong lenses put in your new glasses.

    1. Hello Susan good to hear from you and especially wonderful your news. I feel that the error with the lens is sort of permissible, given that everyone has just started back to work after the long mid-winter break :-)

  3. I'm so impressed you've cured your high BP, Mel. I've just read your methods to Koos. I'm not sure it will help his eyesight (or mine for that matter - I've had cataracts ops), but if it gets his BP down without medication anymore, that would be grand! I'm hoping the seed I've cast will bear fruit :-)

    1. When making changes to eating habits, the hardest for me was in disciplining myself in curtailing my sweet tooth. Eventually I was and am still able to walk past the sweet counters without being tempted. Carbohydrates (wheat, potatoes etc) also no Salt or animal fats etc. For roughage I eat muesli, rye biscuits like Oatcakes, Rice cakes and Ryvita plus lots of Pears and fresh vegetables. Other than that lots of garlic. Regular meditation also lowers blood pressure. I think one of the hidden bonuses for Mrs H was that my loud snoring was also reduced :-)

  4. Eyes and getting older do not go well together do they? As for the wrong lens being fitted - good job you noticed it.
I like the idea of a two mile walk before breakfast but as we breakfast at seven it would be hard at this time of the year.

    1. I agree with you Weaver it is just that I found it better to do a walk on an empty stomach.

  5. Good luck with those new glasses. I'm just getting used to my first pair of glasses myself for reading and still find the experience a little disorientating. Re: your dodgy lenses experience - I tell you, you've got to have eyes in the back of your head these days!

    2. Oh suits you...like the specs. Well just goes to show that everyone makes mistakes including the people who you would least think. glad to hear you're still sticking to the diet and the walking. Oh... can't walk on an empty stomach, I shake like a leaf. I walk a lot more here than I did at my last place and I live in the town. Would you believe there is a lot more places to go to for a lovely strole.

The opticians rang me this morning to apologise and tell me that they have now inserted the correct lens. I shall collect them on Monday as have lots to do today, tomorrow and thro' the weekend.

  6. Know how you feel, I had my eyes tested just before Christmas and picked up a new pair of glasses with occupational varifocal lenses-gosh I can see much better now. I love reading and my lap top but it takes its toll on the eyes.
