One of the Many

A Home for You ?

As many as 35,000 thousand new houses that have never been lived in lie idle in Ireland all since the diabolical bank crash and the imposition of austerity.
The photo above is just one of the many, it was completed during the summer of 2009 and stands on a large site and would be ideal for a keen gardener or even a smallholder.

I think it was built as an investment by the builders, if so it has proved to be a rather costly one, for oil the heating is put on every winter just to keep the place from mouldering.

It is a family sized home with at least four bedrooms and with all of the modern requisites as per a shower on the ground floor. I haven’t been inside or intruded on it’s grounds. Merely gleaned some information by looking in over the hedges which border the property, because at the end of the day I am as nosey as the rest of humanity.

  1. Funny how things go around. When J worked in Dublin, we would have loved to move to Eire but could not afford the property prices. There was such a boom at the time, that my friend could not find a builder to replace her wall, they were all so busy.
    That house looks idyllic.

  2. It must be the same the western world around. While rummaging about my Irish roots I spent a wonderful evening going through houses on the market. They are in every size and shape. May I get to Ireland some day....

  4. The photo is stunning - forget the house! That aside, it looks like a very nice home, so very sad that it remains empty, and has done for so long. The banks need to cut their losses and actually sell it, even if they do it at a loss. An unlived-in house will deteriorate however much money they spend on heating.

  5. The space looks wild and lovely. How wonderful it would be to live there.

  6. If it looks wild and it does, it is because it has not been landscaped. I can assure you that it is surround by farm land.

  7. Does Ireland have a homeless problem like over here? We have so many empty homes that could be used but don't for various reasons. It is a lovely house in a stunning location, reminds me of Wuthering Heights x

  8. A good question Fran, I have just checked and currently there are approximately 5,000 people who are homeless.

  9. It's a crazy old world. Maybe the moral of the story is NOT to go chasing big profits. If he'd built the house for a particular client, everyone would now be happy.

  11. A lovely-looking home that belongs there, silhouetted against the blue. Red door beckoning (I would never paint it black ...) and twin chimneys awaiting winter's smoke. Where do I sign?
