Hot and Cold

I am not really a gadget person, though from time to time I do get a hankering
for an item which I see as useful.

Quite a few years ago a friend treated herself to a new car a Yaris and I was quite
taken with the thingy that gave the outside temperature - brilliant I want one
So when browsing in Lidl the other day I saw a gadget which would show not only
the outside temp but also the interior temp too and being in a reckless mood
I bought it and installed it yesterday.

So here it is >

Fortunately there was an available short blind shelf just beneath the radio
into which I placed the gadget. Note the temps 21.1C interior and 12.6C
outside at 8.1pm last night.

I fed the long cable around the dash on the passenger side hiding 99% of it
out of sight and free from being interfered with by rambling fingers or wayward feet.

Following the advice of a friend I have relocated the sensor to a void within the inside of the wing as it gives a more accurate reading and is not effected by the heat from the sun.

  1. Our car has a thing which shows the outside temp but not the inside. I think it is rather natty - I can understand why you wanted one. In any case why should we not treat ourselves now and again to things we fancy? Maybe it is because we grew up in the age of austerity - whatever it is we have to fight not to feel guilty don't we?

    1. Thank you for your comment Pat and am sure that you are correct about growing up in the age of austerity, I admit that the time of post war shortages never crossed my mind.

  2. My car has the outside temperature gauge and I love it. When we drive my husband's car his doesn't and I make snarky remarks. Maybe I'll look for one to install in his car.

    1. That is a good idea Janet have the gadgets equal although if you get one like mine you will get two temps and that will make you envious then :)

    1. Heated seats are the last thing that we need, for Toyota does an excellent heater.

  5. Very cool! Although I rarely get lost when traveling or driving around, a must-need in my vehicle is a compass - I'm fond of the cheap round ones that kind of bob along when you're driving.

    1. A compass, yes. We keep one in the glove compartment & we use it when we visit sacred sites to check the alignments with other megaliths.
Don't need it for driving at all, just know more or less the direction according to where the sun is and time of day. In the morning if it is on the left am going south or on the right heading north.

    2. Compasses are wonderful!
I too use the sun and time, but if ever I'm in a new place in the rain or the dark, I have to know which direction I'm going. I'm weird like that. I need a pocket compass for my next trip to a new place.

    3. Carol may be if I lived on a continent instead of an island, then I too would make more use of a compass - I don't know.

  7. I'm fascinated by temperatures...especially for gardening and wildlife purposes. This year I have already seen 19.5 degrees in the day and 1.5 degrees at night, and that was in one day. Love the gadget, I have a weather station which I love.

  8. Hello,Mel! I'm back in blogland again. I've just been scanning through your posts and see I have a LOT to catch up with. I love your temperature gadget. My problem is they never last with me. I bought a small clock for my car (it doesn't have its own) and within a few weeks, it stopped working. Only one speaker of my car radio works, and I have to be careful where I put my bags as if I touch the wrong things, the other one stops working too! I hope yours gives you long service and accurate temperatures :) By the way, my blog address has changed to http://vallypee.blogspot.com

  9. Given the Merc's ambient temp gauge reads some 50% high or low, depending on the time of day and phase of the moon, this would be a great purchase!

    1. It is a great gadget Bill we are very pleased with it and as I now sit in the passenger seat it gives me something intelligent to look at :)
