The Old Boy's Coffee !

I have often been looked upon as being slightly mad or a bit odd on occasions
but I don’t care for it is my eccentric mind which looks at problems and tries to
find a solution.

We drink coffee, it is our favourite beverage, two or three times a day and use Lavazza at home in a cafetiere, or to you folks across the pond a 'french press'.
To my mind coffee has to be reasonably strong so at least three heaped dessert spoons go into the cafetiere.

New use for an old hat

I noticed that heat was being lost whilst the coffee stood so we used an old fleece hat to act as a cozy.
Then by cutting a small hole at the top of the hat, the metal knob stands clear prior to pressing.
When the plunger is depressed fully the coffee is kept hot and it is quite a simple task to lift the cozy clear when pouring the coffee into a cup.

Steeping the coffee

The water, at about 90 deg C (never boiling), is poured on top and left to stand for about five minutes allowing the water to absorb the coffee grounds and give a good fulsome flavour.

Immediately prior to pouring

I am rather pernickety about the style and shape of cup which has to be tapered and I loathe drinking coffee from a mug, in much the same way as I dislike instant coffee.
A tapered cup wide at the top allows both the aroma and flavour to combine and perfect my favourite drink.

  1. Robert drinks his coffee from a french press, I drink mine from an automatic drip machine (a Mr. Coffee type). I get headaches from french press coffee :( I have two big mugs in the morning, and then that is it for me with coffee for the day.
Oh you tease! I need/must see your favorite coffee cup!!
Oh and during the afternoon, I have a cup of black tea. It has become a nice quieting reflective ritual for me.

Actually I find that a coffee at night puts me to sleep very quickly.

    2. Oh thank you for the photos! I can see what you mean by the shape of the cup. I love seeing people's preferences for their dishes/crockery.

Sometimes coffee does that to me, too - usually on Sunday mornings and that after-breakfast&coffee-nap is all too perfect!

  3. I love your improvised coffee cosy - jolly good idea.
We use a thermal coffee pot - and always Taylors of Harrogate Lazy Sunday Coffee.
    Love your coffee cup too.
And, incidentally, I love eccentric folk - they are always the most interesting.

  4. Generally I am a tea drinker, but I do like a cup of 'proper' coffee on occasions. I cannot stand instant coffee either., but I do like the idea of a two handled cup, can think of a few times it would have come in handy!

    1. Thanks for your comment Fran, I rarely drink tea other than Green or Rooibos and quite often a cup of spring water is very satisfying.

Well, it is our simple daily pleasures that are so important and things need to be right.
Tony will be losing one of his hats now.

  7. We use a French Press and you're right, the coffee does tend to cool off in it. Using an old hat would be a good solution, but not my husband's old hat.
